Sharks add Dellandrea, Goodrow

The San Jose Sharks made some moves today, and it only cost the team a 2025 fourth-round pick. As expected, the Sharks picked Barclay Goodrow up off of waivers, getting the forward for free. It was not without some controversy. According to Larry Brooks at the New York Post, the Sharks appear to have been on Goodrow’s list of 15 teams he did not want to be traded to, and so the forward is none too pleased that New York Rangers General Manager Chris Drury found a way around the problem.

By placing Goodrow on waivers, Drury was able to avoid the no-trade clause and allow the Sharks to pick up Goodrow for free. There’s not much that Goodrow or the Players Association can do to protest the move.

But Goodrow wasn’t the only player added to the Sharks’ roster today. General Manager Mike Grier also traded Winnipeg’s fourth-round pick in 2025 to the Dallas Stars for 23-year-old Ty Dellandrea.

What the Sharks get in Dellandrea

Dellandrea turns 24 in July. He’s 6-foot-2 and 190 pounds according to his NHL.com stat sheet. He had 9 points for the Stars in 42 games this season and added a single goal in six playoff games.

Dellandrea is coming off a one-year deal that paid him $900,000. He’s a restricted free agent and is arbitration-eligible. His qualifying offer must be $945,000, according to Puckpedia.

So, what do the Sharks get? Our friends at Defending Big D offered some insight into Dellandrea’s game and what he brings to the table.

“Dellandrea is a reasonable two-way center with solid skating ability,” Managing Editor Taylor Baird told us. “He has a penchant for popping in some goals at opportune times — he surprisingly has a lot of playoff goals in high-pressure games like when the team is down in the series or in elimination games — but kind of got surpassed by a pretty deep forward corps in Dallas.

“His lack of consistent ice time may have lent itself to some big defensive gaffes when he did play that cost him the trust of the coaching staff in Dallas, but he’s still young, so he could become a good middle-six forward with some big minutes and a defined role,” continued Baird. “Dellandrea is a big lockerroom presence, beloved by his teammates in Dallas, and a consummate professional when things weren’t always going his way this season and could easily be a leader down the road.”

Dellandrea did not make Scott Wheeler of The Athletic’s prospect list for Dallas this season, but that’s because he hasn’t been considered a “prospect” for a few seasons. Here’s what Wheeler said in 2022 about the 13th overall pick in the 2018 draft:

“He plays to the inside, he keeps himself engaged and involved in the play in all three zones, he’s an able penalty killer and his skating has shown marked improvement this season so that he’s able to put defenders on their heels a little more when he attacks,” said Wheeler. “I like his shot from the mid-to-high slot more and more (he’s got a balanced stance and can pick his spots in the net when he’s got time, even if he’s not a powerful shooter). He’s got good hands in tight around the net, too. But his game lacks a defining trait and he’s likely a bottom-six piece as a result.”

Shaping the San Jose Sharks lineup

With both Goodrow and Dellandrea, it sounds like the Sharks have a bottom-six forward corps close to set. The trouble will be at the top and on defense. However, with young players like Will Smith and, potentially, Macklin Celebrini learning the ropes, having a player like Goodrow there to take some of the pressure off on the penalty kill isn’t a bad thing.

Dellandrea may be the kind of piece that pushes players like Thomas Bordeleau and Daniil Gushchin to fight harder for their roles on the team.
